How does the online Sudoku work?

Our free online Sudoku can be played comfortably with a mouse or touchscreen. When an empty field is selected, nine small helper numbers appear. These can be toggled or entered as the solution for that field. Two additional hints are available when progress is difficult. An entered number can be removed with a single click; the helper numbers then appear again.

What are mouse and touchscreen mode in Sudoku?

To make playing online Sudoku as convenient as possible, two game modes are available: mouse mode for PCs and touchscreen mode. Online Sudoku generally detects the appropriate mode automatically, but the game mode can be changed manually at any time.

How does the Sudoku mouse mode work?

In Sudoku mouse mode for PCs, the small helper numbers are toggled with a single mouse click. Double-clicking the respective helper number enters that number as the solution in the field.

Mouse controls are direct and intuitive, without unnecessary additional clicks.

How does the touchscreen mode work?

In touchscreen mode, additional buttons are displayed for toggling helper numbers and entering a number as the solution. First, any Sudoku field is selected by tapping it; the buttons then apply to that field.

Direct toggling of helper numbers is disabled in touchscreen mode because the small numbers are difficult to select accurately with a finger. Double-tapping may also zoom the view in or out and is therefore not suitable for controls.

What are the Sudoku hints?

Two practical tools are available for online Sudoku: “Scan everything” checks rows, columns and quadrants and displays unique solutions. In addition, the correct number for a selected field can be revealed.

These Sudoku hints are particularly useful for beginners. They make it possible to get support and then understand why a solution is correct. Of course, they can also be used when progress is difficult – Sudoku should be about enjoyment rather than frustration.

What exactly is scanned in Sudoku?

The “Scan everything” button displays the helper numbers in all fields and starts a check of all rows, columns and quadrants. It determines in which fields numbers are excluded and whether a field within a row, column or quadrant must contain a particular number. Unique solutions are then highlighted in colour.

All numbers already entered are taken into account; there is no access to the complete solution. If an incorrect number was entered previously, the scan may therefore also display incorrect solution numbers.

During the scan process of Sudoku Online, only entered numbers and, in some cases, unique solutions already identified are considered. To find further solution numbers, it may therefore be necessary to consider positions that are not unique. This can occur, for example, when a number can only be placed in one of two fields within a row, column or quadrant and therefore rules out positions in other rows, columns or quadrants. As a result, the scan may not find any further solutions.

How do I uncover a Sudoku field?

The “Uncover” button enters the correct number in a Sudoku field. If a field is already selected in touchscreen mode, the correct number is entered there directly. Otherwise, a field must first be selected.

What is recorded in the Sudoku statistics?

The Sudoku statistics only record solutions that are checked after the puzzle has been completed. Solutions using hints or intermediate checks are not included. A time window also applies: if a Sudoku is solved unrealistically quickly or if the solving time is too long, for example because of a longer interruption, the result is not included in the statistics. Statistics may also be updated with a delay.

How does the Sudoku contest work?

Once a Sudoku has been solved and checked, the result, including a link, can be shared on social media. When this link is opened, the specified times and actions are displayed in square brackets before the timer and on the buttons. This makes it possible to try to beat the result and then share a new result as well.

What is the high contrast mode in Sudoku?

In addition to light and dark designs, online Sudoku offers a high-contrast mode in pure black and white. In the Sudoku grid, given numbers are displayed with a solid underline, while incorrectly entered numbers have a dotted underline. This helps compensate for all forms of colour blindness.

What are the Sudoku rules?

A Sudoku consists of nine columns and nine rows, making a total of 81 fields. These are divided into nine quadrants, each containing 3 × 3 fields. In every row, column and quadrant, each number from 1 to 9 may appear only once. A valid Sudoku has exactly one solution.
