How does the online Sudoku work?

Our online Sudoku can be easily operated with the mouse or a touch screen. If you click in an empty field, 9 small help numbers appear, which you can toggle and enter as a solution in the field. In addition, there are 2 hints if you get stuck. An entered number can also be deleted by simply clicking on it, in which case the help numbers appear again.

The help numbers are available in 2 colors, whether you use both colors and how you use them is up to you. For example, you can use the 2nd color to mark 2 possible positions of a number within a column/row/quadrant if they are already blocking other positions for this number.

What are mouse and touchscreen mode in Sudoku?

To make the online Sudoku as comfortable as possible, we have integrated 2 game modes, a mode for the mouse on the PC and a mode for the touch screen. The Online Sudoku tries to determine the correct mode automatically, but the game mode can also be switched manually.

How does the Sudoku mouse mode work?

In Sudoku mode for the mouse on the PC, the small auxiliary numbers are switched by a simple mouse click and a number is entered as the solution by double-clicking on the corresponding auxiliary number.

Operation with the mouse is very direct and intuitive, no unnecessary additional clicks.

How does the touchscreen mode work?

In touchscreen mode, additional buttons are displayed to switch between the auxiliary numbers and to enter a number as a solution. Any Sudoku field is then activated by tapping it and these buttons then affect this field.

Direct switching of the auxiliary numbers is deactivated in touchscreen mode, especially as it is difficult to hit the small numbers correctly with your finger. Double-clicking on the touch screen zooms in and out, so it cannot be used for operation either.

What are the Sudoku hints?

We offer 2 tools for Sudoku Online: scanning of all rows, columns and quadrants, including display of all unique solutions found, and the option of entering a correct number in a field.

These tools are ideal for beginners, i.e. get help and then see for yourself why this solution is correct. But of course you can also use them if you get stuck - the focus should be on fun, not frustration because you are stuck.

What exactly is scanned in Sudoku?

The “Scan everything” button uncovers the auxiliary numbers in all fields and starts a scan process in all rows, columns and quadrants, checks in which fields which number is blocked and also whether the respective field within the row, column or quadrant must have a certain number. Unique solutions are then highlighted in color.

All numbers entered are taken into account and there is no access to the solution, i.e. if an incorrect number was previously entered in a field, the scanning process can also display incorrect solution numbers.

The scanning process for Sudoku Online also only takes into account entered numbers and, in some cases, clear solutions that have already been determined. It may therefore be necessary to consider “ambiguous” positions for further solution numbers, e.g. if a number must be in one of 2 fields within a column/row or quadrant and other positions in other columns/rows/quadrants are already blocked as a result. This can lead to the scanning process not finding any further solutions.

How do I uncover a Sudoku field?

The " Uncover" button enters the correct number in the Sudoku field. If a field is already selected in touchscreen mode, the correct number is entered here, otherwise a field must be selected.

What is recorded in the Sudoku statistics?

The Sudoku statistics only record solutions where the solution has been checked once at the end, i.e. all solutions with aids or intermediate checks are not taken into account. There is also a time window, if a Sudoku was solved impossibly quickly or the solution time is too long, e.g. due to absence in the meantime, it is not included in the statistics. The update of the statistics can also be delayed.

How does the Sudoku contest work?

Once you have solved and checked a Sudoku, you have the option of sharing your result, including a link, on social media. If a friend now clicks on this link, he will see the given times and actions in [] in front of the timer and on the buttons and can try to be better and can then also share his result.

What is the high contrast mode in Sudoku?

In addition to the light and dark designs, there is also the option of displaying the website and the Sudoku in high contrast, i.e. pure black and white. In the Sudoku, the given numbers are then displayed with a solid underline and incorrectly entered numbers with a dotted underline. This representation can be used to compensate for all forms of color blindness.

What are the Sudoku rules?

A Sudoku consists of 9 columns and 9 rows, which together make 81 Sudoku squares, which in turn are divided into 3x3 square quadrants. The numbers 1-9 appear once in each row/column/quadrant. In a real Sudoku there is only one solution.
